Viagra is the most famous drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It’s medical name is Sildenafil, and it was discovered by scientists at the massive pharmaceutical corporation Pfizer.

How Are Erections Normally Maintained?
When you get aroused, your brain sends a signal down a nerve fiber to a nerve cell in an artery in the penis.
For erections to happen safely, your body has to regulate the amount of blood going to the penis. The heart is only capable of pumping a certain volume and can speed up and slow down according to your physiological state.
To ensure you achieve a stable erection your body uses a chemical and enzyme based system. It starts with Nitric Oxide – a messenger – which stimulates the release of an enzyme called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP).
cGMP is what relaxes your artery walls and allows blood flow to the penis. Another enzyme called PDE (phosphodiesterase) deactivates cGMP at the same rate so that the erection is maintained and the penis doesn’t get too much blood.
What Is Erectile Dysfunction?
There can be multiple reasons for this problem, but the one which relates to the use of Viagra is a common one.
Some men, mostly older men, have lost some of the cGMP production and so cannot maintain blood flow and thus an erection.
One way to combat this would be an increase in Nitric Oxide – the signaller to release cGMP. Another would be to increase cGMP itself.

How Does Viagra Work?
Viagra reduces the PDE – the enzyme which deactivates the cGMP. This is so that cGMP can build up and increase blood flow.
Viagra is usually taken 30 to 60 minutes before sex and can stay active for up to 8 hours, although the average is 4 to 5 hours.
When Does Viagra Not Work?
It is important to note that Viagra only works if you are already aroused, and therefore sending the signal of arousal down the nerve fiber to the arteries in and around the penis.
If getting aroused is your problem then Viagra will not work. You need to look at other options.

Does Viagra Have Negative Side Effects?
As with most prescription drugs, Viagra can have some negative effects. Some are to be expected, while others are a bit of a shock.
Viagra can have the following side effects:
- Affects Colour Vision – this is down to viagra impacting not only PDE5 (the specific variant important to erections) but PDE6 which is used in the cone cells of the retina in your eyes!
- Can Impact Other Drugs – unfortunately, older guys are susceptible to more than just erection problems. Angina medication doesn’t go well with Viagra because it increases Nitric Oxide. The double effect of increasing Nitric Oxide while removing PDE can cause heart problems.
- Headaches
- Heart Attacks – this is rare and the most severe side effect possible. That’s why it’s prescription-only.
- Long-lasting and Painful Erection (potentially several hours)
How Do I Avoid These Negative Side Effects?
The best advice we can give you is to consult your doctor and when he/she asks about your medical history – tell them everything.
Also, allow them to do any tests necessary to find out if Viagra is right for you.
